LABOR’S promise to toughen tree-clearing laws could further hurt the cattle industry, according to the Mount Isa LNP candidate.
John Wharton said: “It could set the cattle industry back 10 years.”
He said trees affected the amount of grass on properties used for cattle grazing.
It also prevented trees near roads from being cleared if they were a danger to drivers. There were good reasons for graziers who lived on the land for generations to clear trees, he said.
“This is stupid – once again Greens rules the Labor Party,” Mr Wharton said.
Labor has promised to repeal the Water Act 2014.
Queensland Farmers’ Federation chief executive Dan Galligan said the repeal would ruin gains from farmers, who have been able to run their businesses productively and sustainably.
Mr Galligan said freedom to clear trees in recent years allowed land owners to clear vegetation near fence lines, or where it blocked irrigation equipment.
